The Dominican baseball world was recently shaken by the unexpected departure of Luis Polonia, emblematic former player and coach of the Águilas Cibaeñas. Polonia, a revered figure in the national sport, shared his feelings about this decision that marked the end of an era after more than four decades of dedication to the team.

“For me it was a shock,” he expressed visibly affected.

In an interview, Polonia described the experience as a “shock,” emphasizing the surprise he felt when being let go. The former coach deeply regretted the lack of communication and recognition from the management, especially from the team president, despite his long career and significant contributions to the Águilas Cibaeñas. Poland explained that the arrival of a new management was presented as a period of renewal. However, the only visible change was their departure, which caused them great disappointment.

“They said they wanted new things, a different environment… but in the end, the only change that was made was that of Luis Polonia,” he maintained.

When questioned about whether he felt betrayed, Poland criticized the lack of leadership from the presidency, highlighting that he did not receive any call to thank him for his years of service. Instead, the communication came from Jean Guzmán, leading him to speculate about possible projects related to the organization of the Chicago Cubs, rather than his own disengagement.

The departure from Poland is especially painful due to the time and effort he dedicated to the franchise. The former player, a symbol of dedication and passion, expressed his sadness at the way his departure occurred, recalling his more than 40 years of dedication to the team.

“That hurts because I spent a lifetime there, 40-something years. I understand that nobody is eternal, but I never thought of it that way. If you say you’re going to make a change in the coaching staff, but the only change is me, that hurts”, he expressed with a tone of resignation.

Despite this difficult moment, Poland assured that they hold no grudge and wished the team and the new management success. However, they reminded them of the responsibility they now have before a fanbase that yearns for victory. Poland emphasized that the Eagles cannot fail this year, given that the fans are tired of defeats.
