Dallas Wings sign Jose Fernández, former USF coach

The Dallas Wings are on the verge of securing Jose Fernandez, coach of South Florida, as their new head coach, according to sources close to the team. Although the contract has not yet been signed at the moment, it is expected that this will happen shortly. Fernandez would become the fifth coach in seven seasons for the Wings, who are looking to build a competitive team after the arrival of Paige Bueckers, franchise star and first draft pick. The Wings were looking for a candidate with significant experience as a head coach, a proven track record of sustained success, and international reach. USF confirmed in a statement on social media that Fernandez has informed the school about his decision to leave the program to coach in the WNBA. Fernandez led the Bulls to 10 NCAA tournament appearances, including eight in the last 11 years, since his arrival in Tampa in 2000, accumulating a 485-317 record and turning the program into one of the best in the nation.

For the past 25 years, Jose has been an exceptional leader, mentor, and advocate for the University of South Florida. His impact on USF Athletics and our university community is profound, and his legacy will be remembered and celebrated in the years to come.

Michele Woods-Baxter was named interim head coach of USF before the 2025-26 season, which begins on November 3. Dallas announced in September that it would do without Chris Koclanes after a year at the helm, where the Wings had a 10-34 record and finished in last place. The Wings also have the best odds of getting the first pick in the next draft lottery, which will be held on a date yet to be announced. Three WNBA coaching vacancies have already been filled, with the Portland Fire hiring Alex Sarama and the Toronto Tempo on the verge of hiring Sandy Brondello.
